About the Machair Collection
Rebecca Plater has found inspiration for this design in the Machairs of Scotland surrounding her home. She creates each flower from hand-painted watercolour brushstrokes using a marking process to give this design its unique quality. All of the kitchen textiles in this range are digitally printed on to a luxury weight panama natural cotton fabric. This produces a longer lasting more ethical product that is hand made in the UK.
Machair – an incredible habitat which is home to a vast array of wildflowers, rich with rare bees and provides a breeding ground for wading birds
- A Gaelic term for low-lying and fertile grassy plain
- This unique habitat is only found on the exposed, west facing shores of Scotland and Ireland
- The plains are very similar to fixed sand dunes but are unmistakable due to its flat or very slightly undulated landscape
- A treasured landscape that was originally created from lime-rich shell sand that was washed to the shore from the sea. This sand was blown inland and the low intensive farming methods ensured the rich diversity of the area over hundreds of years.
